About Reiki

What is Reiki

“Reiki” (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’, a term used to describe a natural system to help bring about an improved sense of wellbeing and a positive feeling of spiritual renewal. This tradition was founded by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication. It is a tradition that is open to any belief system and benefits may include deep relaxation and the promotion of a calm peaceful sense of wellbeing. The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is simple. The recipient remains clothed and comfortably lies on a couch or sits on a chair. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively, on or near the body using their intuition and training as a guide. There is no massage or manipulation. Reiki can be used on the person as a whole, or on specific parts
of the body. It is also possible to receive Reiki at a distance.

Reiki is taught by Reiki Master/Teachers, who have trained in the tradition passed on, in person, from Master to student. Students go through a process of initiation/attunement to the Reiki energy. They are then able to treat themselves and others, not only from a personal and emotional perspective, but also as an aid to individual development and spiritual growth.

Choosing a practitioner

It is important to choose a qualified practitioner who has undertaken all the necessary training to understand the theory and practice of Reiki.

You can check whether a Reiki practitioner is registered with the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) by searching the register at www.cnhc.org.uk.

By choosing Reiki practitioners registered with the CNHC you can be confident that they are properly trained, qualified and insured.

Reiki or ‘Usui’s spiritual energy treatment method for the improvement of body and mind’ as described by its founder Mikao Usui Sensei, is a completely natural hands-on healing method.

During a treatment, you receive in greater abundance spiritual or universal energy that flows all around us and in all life. It is passed on to you through a light touch of the hands and will help clear blockages, stimulating and enhancing your own healing ability.

Simple, pure and effective, Reiki works on both physical and emotional level.

Jikiden Reiki

Jikiden means direct teaching

The Jikiden Reiki Kenkyukai (Institute) was founded in 1999 by Chiyoko Yamaguchi and her son Tadao Yamaguchi to preserve the true essence of Reiki and the traditional teaching as it was originally taught in Japan.

After a wonderful first experience discovering and learning western Reiki in Edinburgh, I came across Frank Arjava Petter’s book ‘This is Reiki’. I started to understand more about the origin of Reiki, its background, and links with the Japanese traditions and Shinto. This is also how I discovered that Reiki was still taught as it was originally taught in Japan and I went on to learn with Arjava Sensei, Vice-President of the Jikiden Reiki Kenkyukai (Institute).

Connected to its origin, simple and practical, Jikiden Reiki felt just right to me and this is how I wish to keep practicing and pass on Reiki, following the guidance of our original teachers.

“Traditional Japanese Reiki and the Reiki that has come through Takata Sensei have one very important thing in common: the energy that radiates from the hands of the practitioner, providing that he has been properly initiated.”
